I don’t know about you, but I’m impressed with Google’s commitment to sending more frequent Android Auto updates. A few years ago, the company used a one-release-a-month strategy, with new versions barely making any difference.

The updates that Google sends out in 2024 stick to this “little improvements” approach, but at least they land more frequently. The chance of getting a bug fix is much higher, although Google rarely provides updated changelogs.

This is also the case with Android Auto 12.2.

The new version hit the beta channel a few days ago, and now it’s ready for the stable ring, thanks to a new release. The full version number is 12.2.6424.

Unfortunately, Google didn’t share new release notes, so users are again responsible for determining what’s new in this update. I have already installed both beta and stable version on my device and I haven’t noticed any change. Google will most likely focus on under-the-hood improvements, which is why it’s important for users to download and install updates as soon as possible, especially if they’re having trouble with a major Android Auto bug.

Google has a lot of work to do in the world of Android Auto, especially after the recent announcements made at I/O. The company’s developer conference saw YouTube’s long-awaited confirmation of Android Auto, as Google is finally lifting more restrictions and allowing in-car video apps.

If you’ve been following the news for the past couple of years, support for YouTube in Android Auto has long been a top feature request. The reason is simple: YouTube is not allowed in Android Auto for security reasons, but the app must still run in the car when the vehicle is parked. Google agrees with this approach, as this is how the company offers YouTube on Android Automotive and is now working to bring the same setup to Android Auto.

Android Auto’s video apps will initially roll out in beta, but the research firm hasn’t shared any specifics on when, so it’s impossible to say when that will happen. YouTube is already available on Android Auto with third-party methods, although some of them unlock the full experience without any restrictions and even allow watching videos on the move – it goes without saying that this is a big no-no, so if you’re looking for ways to get YouTube into your car, please don’t watch videos while driving.

Otherwise, the rollout of Android Auto 12.2 has started via the Google Play Store using the same phased process that Google usually uses for new updates. Anyone can download this new version today and avoid the painful waiting time for the update to appear on the Play Store by downloading the Android Auto 12.2 APK installer.
