It was an artificial approval.
A Michigan Republican congressional candidate withdrew Friday after initially apologizing for a video featuring an AI-generated voice of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which appeared on his TikTok account.
The recreated voice of the slain civil rights leader endorses Anthony Hudson to represent Michigan’s 8th Congressional District in a since-deleted social media post that spoofs King’s iconic 1963 “I Have a Dream”.
“I have another dream. Yes, it’s me, Martin Luther King,” the AI voice says in the strange video. “I came back from the dead to say something.”
“As I was saying, I have another dream that Anthony Hudson will be the next congressman of Michigan’s 8th District. Yes, I have a dream again. OK, now I’m going back where I came from, bye,” the disturbingly deep fake continues, before Hudon’s voice comes in to say: “I approve of this message.”
Hudson, an Army veteran and small trucking business owner, claims he had nothing to do with the extremely poor decision.
“A volunteer gave my social media credentials to one of his friends who then posted an AI video without my knowledge,” Hudson wrote on X. “Looks like they not only used AI for MLK Jr’s voice ., but also with my voice.” to make it seem more authentic.”
“The volunteer has been released and all my social media credentials have been updated,” he added. “I would never have approved such a CRAZY and OBVIOUS video!”
Hudson, however, appeared to have a change of heart hours after his initial apology.
“Upon further review of said video of MLK, I have decided not only to not retain my campaign staff, but also to give him a raise as I believe MLK would be disgusted by the full suffering of residents of Flint Michigan under the supervision of the current administration. he wrote in X.
“If MLK were alive today — I believe he would support me and my vision for a better Michigan,” Hudson argued.
The Post has reached out to Hudson’s campaign for comment.
Hudson, who abandoned a long presidential campaign earlier this year, is among three Republicans running in Michigan’s Aug. 6 GOP primary.
Rep. Dan Kildee (D-Mich.) announced last year that he would not seek a seventh term as the Great Lakes’ 8th congressional district, leaving the race open in 2024.
